Leak rate

$

Have done some reading on what is as acceptable leak rate, and confused.

Is it based on the CPAP machine I have a Airsense 10 or on the mask Dreeawear.

And what is an acceptable figure.

I have not set software up as yet and can only read off Airsense?

Comparing AHI between CPAP and For Her

I exported the data from the Resmed app, plugged it into Excel, and created graphs for each period beginning with the plain AirSense 10 CPAP (aka "brick") and the AirSense 10 For Her.

Here.

The AHI is lower during the use of the plain CPAP set at a pressure of 7.0. It increases when I started fiddling with the pressures.
CPAP:
80 nights, Average AHI = 2.1,
with a slight increasing trend: y = 0.0097x - 412.62

For Her:
21 nights, Average AHI = 3.5
with a slight decreasing trend: y = -0.0029x + 125.41

So now I'm wondering if I should drop the minimum back to 7.0. Is a puzzlement (- a quote from the King and I, the Yul Brynner version)

ResMed Airsense 10 Auto Set...Runaway Pressure

$

A while ago, I had changed the max pressure on my machine down from the 20 they had it originally set for to 10...because I would be forced awake by the machine shoving a small hurricane down my nose.

Things seemed good for a while, but recently I've had several instances of being awoken by the machine blowing again at full pressure. (at the new setting of 10).

It had been a while since I had pulled the card and looked at the data using ResScan...and I was completely surprised at what I found.

I would be sleeping/breathing somewhat normally, with no apneas and no airway restrictions or "bumps" in the flow pattern, then with no rhyme or reason the machine would go from my low pressure setting up to the high setting over the course of 5 seconds!!!

Needless to say, I don't last long (1 or 2 minutes) before I wake up and take it off.

Anyone have this experience? Is there something wrong with the machine? I've found several instances where it's had this "runaway" pressure ramping with zero provocation.

Thanks!

3 graphs that are saving my life

History:
I have been on my APAP faithfully for 8 months now and struggling for 7 1/2 of those months. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea with 0 centrals. Prescribed a ResMed S10, pressure 4-16, EPR=off, mask of my choice, and no access to settings. The only results I had access to was MyAir.

After joining this forum, I learned a lot about how PAP machines work and how to adjust them. After 7 1/2 months, of trial and error, I think I have things figured out. The most important thing I learned was, we are all different, and what works for one, doesn't work for all. That, and, you must try everything at least once and have a lot of patience.

I took great pains to graph all the data produced from SleepyHead and here are the three graphs that I thought to be the most important. (To me anyway) I am including the graphs for 3 days. My first month (March), last month (October), and this month (November).

http://imgur.com/a/uMbAH

Graph #1: 90% Pressure -
This is the one metric that has stayed constant over the last 8 months. No matter what changes I made, it seemed to remain in a narrow range. Using the trend line as my measuring tool, the range was 8.0 to 8.5. So from what I have learned from this forum, setting my maximum to 10 is as good of a starting point as any.

Graph #2: Total time in Apnea -
99% of all my Apneas are CAs which are mostly SWJ. They still cause my O2 levels to drop, and wake me up, so I figure they have to go also. I figure in an 8 hour night, 8 one minute apneas are worse than 8 ten second apneas. Both have an AHI of 1.00. As long as this is going in the right direction, all is well.

Graph #3: Comfort level (not pictured)
This is the most important graph of all and is impossible to graph. It includes Mask type, Mask size, Brand name, Mask fit, EPR, Humidity, Ramp, Bed, Bed pillows, and etc. All the little things that make a good night sleep attainable. I left leaks out as that is a function of the mask choices.

I think I have my comfort settings where they need to be and here's why.
Ramp off - My required pressure is low enough that I get used to the mask within the first few seconds of putting on the mask.
Humidity at 3 or 4 - most comfortable
EPR - I tried all settings, off and 3 are just a wee bit uncomfortable although I could get used to either if need be. One and two are comfortable but two is most comfortable and seems to cut down on periodic breathing with CAs late into the night.
Medium pillow - seems to fit best with fewest leaks while the large allows more air in (and out) but will leak more, especially when turning over. I also think the medium works in conjunction with the EPR=2 to make the right combination.
Pressure - Set from 6 to 10. Six is as low as I can go with EPR at 2. And, 10 is 2 above my 90% mark.

Notice, I did not mention the AHI graph. I think this graph is only good for bragging rights. It will follow the time in Apnea very closely.

This is not meant to be a success story (yet). It has become my new starting point from where I will START making minor adjustments if adjustments become warranted.

This is my story and I am sticking to it, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Thanks

DME Visit

Had a visit to my DME for a resupply. Apparently they didn't believe me when I told them I already had a P10. I didn't buy it through them so they said I had to come in "for a fitting" and bring my machine. So I go there and he tries to explain the P10 and I told him I have one. On to the next subject. He started showing me some things on Airview. I told him I use another program to look at my data. I was surprised when he asked, "Sleepyhead?" Dancing

We spent some time shooting the breeze about Sleepyhead Smile

I totally forgot to ask him if he visits this forum or not. I'll try to remember next time I'm there. Some DME aren't all that evil. Dont-know

Pulse Oxygen Sensor

Hi,

I've just joined and WOW! What an amazing resource and bunch of people. So glad to have found this.

I have an initial question. My doc says that my oxygen levels are still low despite being using the Dreamstation with a full face mask. I have decided to purchase a sensor myself. I was wondering if the CMS 50D1 or 50DL will work with sleepyhead? I know the original 50D works but I understand some of the newer models format their data in a different way.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks.

Just got a Zero Water pitcher and am wondering if the almost zero TDS (total dissolved solids) can be used in my CPAP humidifier instead of distilled water.

Thanks

Good Day
I sometimes take a nap at noon for about an hour.
But when I go to bed at night and arise in the morning,I noticed that my nap time has been added onto my sleep time giving me an incorrect reading.
Is there an adjustment or a reset available for this unit?

Memory Loss

Hi

I've been on this journey since March this year. While I no longer get headaches when I wake up, I seem to be experiencing some memory loss - definitely much more than last year.

Has anyone experienced this after starting cpap treatment?

And please don't tell me it due to aging Too-funny. I've yet to hit the big 50.

low heart rate

This is my first time on the forum. I have been using cpap for 7 years. Currently using FFM, however, due to neck strap problems switched to Dreamwear. Stopped using Dreamwear because of mouth breathing had to tape mouth. Now I am having very low heart rate which seems to correlate to my use of cpap. Has anyone had a similar HR problem?

Hypertension and CPAP

I was diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) last year and started taking some meds to lower it.

It seemed to be working with readings around the 120/80 range.

When I was diagnosed with sleep apnoea a few months ago and started CPAP therapy I thought it might help my HT as sleep apnoea is supposed to cause high blood pressure.

My sleeping is much improved with AHI scores in the sub 5 region (from 70+) but my BP seems to have raised (despite me continuing my meds).

Does anyone have any experience of this? Can CPAP raise you BP?

It may just be my meds need adjusting but it is puzzling.

What report from SleepyHead for FAA?

Edit - just saw this is in the wrong forum - Admin, can it be moved or should I delete/repost?

Does anyone have experience with required PAP reports for FAA?

The wording on the requirement states "A copy of the cumulative annual PAP device report which shows actual time used (rather than a report typically generated for insurance providers which only shows if use is greater or less than 4 hours). Target goal should show use for at least 75% of sleep periods and an average minimum of 6 hours use per sleep period."

What report would be most responsive from SleepyHead software?

Thanks!
Greg

I'm here because the sleep clinic ticked me off and I don't even want to go back there. At first they delayed the forwarding of the quote to my insurance for over three months, then trying to sell me a Respironics Dreamstation for over $2200, which my insurance told me was over the accepted limit. When I did some research, I found the same machine for under $1000 online (This is Canada, probably way cheaper in the US). My insurance happily paid 80% but now I'm pretty much on my own. I already made the first mistake by ignorantly ordering a The Dreamstation Pro instead of the Auto, so now I'm stuck with fixed pressure (Once I realized it I found the price difference would have been minor but they won't let me exchange it, since I "opened the box"), however, I'm determined to make it work. I'm so thrilled that I've learned here that I can go into the Provider settings myself, check my own data and be in control of this therapy. I feel so empowered, ha ha. Thank you already and I'll be back with questions, I'm sure. Smile

Not so new member having mask leak issues
My doctor upgraded my Resmed S7 Vpap machine to an AirCurve 10 ASVAuto machine about 3 months ago. Since I received my new machine I awaken every night by leaks. Vibration and sound.
I thought it was improper mask sizing due to significant weight loss. So off to the sleep center and each time I was prescribed a different mask or nasal pillow.
FF Mirage Quattro
FF AirFit F10
FF Philips Respironics
Mirage Liberty FF w/ nasal pillow
Nuance & Nuance Pro Nasal Pillow

Nothing has worked. And the sleep center said that they are out of options for me.
So here I am at the Apnea Board trying to navigate my way to a good night’s sleep.

I am thinking that it isn’t the mask fit at all and perhaps the settings on my machine are incorrect and if I could simply lower the pressure, then leaks would be eliminated.
The problem is that I am having a really tough time understanding how and what should be adjusted on the AirCurve.
Could someone help me determine if the settings on my machine appear to be high?
